SCRIP is a fundraising method popular with non-profit organizations. With SCRIP, retailers offer gift certificates/cards to non-profits at a discount. The non-profits sell the gift cards to families at full face value. The families redeem them at full face value, and the discount or rebate is retained by the non-profit organization as revenue. The parish/school office has SCRIP available to local grocery stores, restaurants and department/retail stores. Purchasing SCRIP is easy. You choose the gift cards you want to purchase and pay either by check or cash. As each gift card is sold the school receives a percentage of the sales. The percentage may be as small as 1% or as large as 16% depending on the retailer. Every little bit adds up. The profits from the sale of SCRIP go to the PTO account to be used for funding of events, repairs and purchases for the school. So next time you read the Bulletin and see, “We sold $5,175.00 last week for a profit of $204.77; with 20 families participating”, you may understand a little more what it means.
